On the cusp of New York fashion week, designers scramble to ready their collections for the public eye. Arranging for final fittings, sound checks, light staging and more – each aspect harmonizing in hopes to create an everlasting mark on the industry for each respective label.

In addition to the perfect lighting, styling, and venue, contemporary designers have learned to incorporate various other sensory dimensions to their shows beyond visuals in order to express their concept and stand out amongst their peers. With the introduction of scent on the catwalk, brands can elevate the memorability and impact of their fashion week showing in the minds of their guests, the most important players in the industry. In recent years, big names such as Manning CartellMax MaraScotch & Soda and Hugo Boss have all implemented scenting in their seasonal shows.

Ideally, a brand’s scent is as identifying as their logo. Often, a label’s signature scent can portray their personal brand’s essence in a way that simple visuals cannot. Scent is far more nostalgic and visceral to an individual, heading straight to our brain and creating memory association as well as the strongest emotional response out of all our senses. The implementation of scent during fashion shows completes the overall experience. Guests visually watch the show, hear the complimentary soundtrack, and smell the mood as intended by the designer. Scent Festival will host a truly immersive experience at the Baroque style Wildegg Castle in Switzerland. Nestled amongst gardens, meadows and vineyards the castle was founded during the 13th century by the Habsburg.

In present times, the castle allows visitors to explore the ornately decorated rooms and lush, fragrant rose gardens while learning about the castle’s history from medieval to modern times. As a renowned tourist attraction, the Wildegg Castle is the ultimate venue to experience the exciting olfactory tour “The Festival of Fragrances / Festival der Düfte” creating a portal to the past with the power of scent. “The Festival of Fragrances” will take place between October 17-22, inviting visitors to explore the sights & scents of the castle, seducing them into the fascinating world of fragrance.

Fifteen individual rooms within the castle will be imbued with a unique fragrance creation. A team of international perfumers, aromatherapists and creative teams developed the fragrances for each room to amplify the sensory experience. Heavily inspired by historical and cultural influences, the fragrances will explore the heritage of each room – recalling stories from previous tenants the Effinger family while touching on the evolving political, religious and social norms over the centuries. To protect the integrity of the fragrances and ensure evenly scented surroundings, all scents will be diffused through Air Aroma cold-air diffusion equipment. As the leading scent marketing company Air Aroma’s scent diffusion products preferred by perfumers and fragrance enthusiasts.

Each of the rooms will be immaculately staged with objects from the Museum Aargau for a historically accurate representation of the time. Our sense of smell is one of the most important ways in which we connect with the world around us, it is the sense most closely linked with memory and is also highly emotive with fragrances being able to convey a vast array of emotions and feelings. It is not surprising then that a museum dedicated solely to perfume has opened its doors in France.

Le Grand Musee du Parfum, the world’s first scent-centric attraction is located in Paris, the capital of perfume. The museum is set in the heart of Paris’s Golden Triangle inside the 19th century mansion that was formerly Christian Lacroix’s haute couture house. The content takes visitors through a multi-sensory journey throughout the history and science of perfume making using high-tech graphic, sound and scent installations. 

The olfactory journey begins in ancient Egypt with the first fragrance ever created by man, Kyphi, a pungent woody compound used to invoke the gods. Visitors are then guided through the scents of different eras throughout history to the 20th century where Paris is consolidated as the centre of scent and perfumery. Interactive installations have been designed to allow tourists to smell the 25 iconic base ingredients used by perfumers, such as rose absolute, orange blossom or patchouli.

The Garden of Scents hosts an artistic installation of trumpet-like diffusers which emit various evocative smells such as fire smoke, cinnamon and even Coca-Cola for visitors to identify. It is here where visitors will learn the extraordinary emotional power of scent. Behind the mansion, a garden will be planted with aromatic plants and flowers which are specially cultivated for their scent such as jasmine and rose.

The museum boasts state-of-the-art technology which allows visitors to record the fragrance accents they like on an electronic card as they make their way around the exhibits. At the end of the experience, interactive stations will allow patrons to purchase perfumes containing the ingredients and fragrance accents they have enjoyed. The innovate museum hopes to attract the increasing number of tourists that visit Paris for luxury shopping and lead visitors deep into the secrets of perfume making.

Mike Bouchet, an American artist known for his bold, multidisciplinary works that dig at the realities of consumer culture, has recently produced a piece that inspires commentary on American capitalism. With an ode to greed, materialism and power, or something else, Tender presents something intangible yet palpable; the scent of a US Dollar bill.

Due to the nuances of a crisp freshly printed dollar as well as a warm and worn bill, the US Dollar bill lives many lives and inspires a range of associations. Bouchet’s Tender is the scent itself within an open empty gallery, creating a space for a reflective sensory experience. 

Air Aroma partnered with Marlborough Chelsea to deliver the scent, creating a subtle ambiance that permeates throughout the 6,000 sq. ft. gallery. To develop the scent perfumer Marc Vom Ende spent many months researching, perfecting and even extracting chemical compounds from pressed bills. Cotton and linen were fused with ink, as well as 100 other volatile organic chemicals like leather, metal, salt and sweat, to create the distinct aroma.

When one thinks of a flower, images of beauty and sweet aromas come to mind. A blushing bouquet, fresh garden or whimsical meadow provide some of the sweetest daydreams and scent experiences. 

There is one flower that happens to be the antithesis of this, the bloom of the Amorphophallus Titanium; otherwise known as the Titan Arum or the corpse flower. The reason for this formidable flower is the putrid smell of rotting flesh it gives off when it blooms.

Native only to Sumatra, Indonesia, the corpse flower can grow up to 12 feet in the wild or 6-8 feet in cultivation, and blossoming is a rare and special event. The scent of rotting meat during the flowering attracts carcass eating insects which help pollinate the plant. 

The deep red color and texture of the inside of the plant paired with the warm body temperature during its peak provide disturbing yet fascinating results. The incredible spectacle lasts only 1-2 days but surely makes its presence known. It is an extremely rare occurrence, as the last time this spectacle occurred in the US was in 1939, nearly 80 years ago at the New York Botanical Garden.

This rare and potent flower takes 10 years to cultivate in order to be primed for flowering, and the Botanical Garden has tenderly cultivated one of these enormous plants, awaiting its millennial debut. The bloom is expected this weekend, Saturday and Sunday only at the New York Botanical Garden. While the event is short lived, it is sure to be a popular draw with its pungent presentation. A “corpse flower cam” constantly records any approaching developments of the flowers’ ironically beautiful bloom so that admirers can make the journey to the New York Botanical Gardento experience this putrid smelling flower in person, a true horticultural gem.

Air Aroma and Cosmoprof North America have teamed up again for this year’s show at Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. Air Aroma is proud to be diffusing the CPNA custom signature scent at the 14th annual beauty exhibition July 24th – July 26th, 2016!

Last year, we worked closely with Daniela Ciocan, Cosmoprof North America’s Director of Marketing, to create an uplifting, energizing, and unique aroma to be diffused throughout the show floors. This fragrance, will again be diffused in the entrance ways and check in areas of the exhibition, helping to create a bespoke sensory experience for all attendees.

The CPNA signature scent was custom designed around the company’s origins, which can be traced back to Italy. Drawing on nearly 20 years of experience in helping companies implement scent as part of their overall branding strategy, Air Aroma took many aspects of the event into consideration including the brand history, audience, brand positioning in the beauty industry, location, and overall event aesthetic. The resulting fragrance takes you on an olfactive journey with classic notes of rustic Italian citrus and rich orange blossom. Designed to create an elevated sensory experience, notes of sparkling grapefruit, crisp bergamot, and fresh mandarin open this fragrance. Air Aroma has been exclusively selected as the official scent partner for the International Luxury Hotel Association. ILHA is a non-profit professional association that fosters development of luxury hospitality worldwide. Its vision is to be the preeminent association promoting, advancing, and ultimately unifying the luxury hotel industry by means of research and insight. 

The 2015 ILHA Luxury Hotel Conference was this past weekend in Orlando, Florida at the Orlando Convention Center. It was a huge success, bringing together professionals and leaders in luxury hospitality and wellness for keynotes, meetings, and networking events. Air Aroma had the chance to present our range of products and fragrance designs for thousands of industry colleagues and visitors. In addition, Carly Fowler, National Account Manager at Air Aroma USA, was selected as an industry speaker at this year’s event. Carly presented insight into scent marketing and strategies for high-end properties, elaborating on Air Aroma’s unique signature scent process for brands and the science of olfactive logos.
