Understanding Fragrance: A Valuable Skill

The ability to discern and appreciate various fragrances is a learned skill and one that anybody can practice to enrich their sensory skills or better comprehend fragrances. Although not strictly mathematical, as describing fragrance still requires a bit of imagination, tools like Michael Edwards’ Fragrance Wheel prove to be invaluable.  While scent can be subjective, there are usually general ideas or themes that one can pick up on. Categorizing and naming fragrance components helps to make associations between different fragrances and understand their origin and character with greater context. The ability to discern between various fragrances can grow stronger over time with practice and deepen one’s relationship to the sensory world overall.

The Fragrance Wheel

The fragrance wheel was developed by perfumer Michael Edwards in 1983. Much like a color wheel, it groups categories together in a way that allows for overlap and gradual variances. Fragrance families or olfactive groups are based on aromatic characteristics commonly found across all fragrances. The wheel is useful in that it provides a visual representation of the olfactive spectrum.

The Fragrance Wheel uses four major scent categories: floral, oriental, woody, and fresh. Each category then has subgroups that further define these characteristics based on aromatic variances. These include floral oriental, soft oriental, woody oriental, mossy woods, dry woods, aromatic, citrus, water, green, and fruity.

Michael Edwards Fragrance Wheel

The Fragrance Families

Floral

Floral fragrances encompass a beautiful bouquet of floral style scents, from delicate rose to exotic jasmine, and sweet strong tuberose that evoke elegance and femininity. Floral fragrances with powdery notes can referred to as soft floral, while sweet, spicier fragrances with notes like orange blossom falling under the subcategory floral oriental.

Find verdant floral in Ginger Flower, floral citrus in Zuri and Zesty White Tea, and floral oriental in Spice Trader.

Oriental

As floral notes move into oriental, there is a noticeable depth and complexity that appears in this style. Indulgent and luxurious, the oriental family includes notes of amber and incense in soft oriental, resins, and woodier notes like sandalwood and patchouli in woody oriental.

Explore Amber Grand, Thé Vert Oriental, and Spice Trader in Oriental scent styles.

Woody

Scent notes described as woody are often very important in the overall composition of a fragrance, as these stronger base notes help build the foundation for the scent and allow the notes to work together seamlessly. Aromatic woods include the root Vetiver, while mossy woods include notes of oakmoss. Dry woods include cedarwood and leather. Earthy, warm and sophisticated, woody notes play a prominent role in popular scent compositions.

Smell Cedar Mood, Havana, Sandalwood Gold, and Saffron Suede as some of our favorite woody styles.

Fresh

Refreshing and clean, fresh notes offer a lightness that is found within various subcategories – often in citrus like bergamot and lemon, aquatic styles in marine notes, fruity in notes like berries, green in grass and botanical notes, and aromatic or herbal notes including lavender, mint and rosemary. Many fresh fragrances reiterate invigorating experiences in nature, like fresh morning mists or a walk along the seashore.

Discover fresh styles in Illuminate, White Tea Thyme, Sunkissed, and Iron Bark.

Fragrance Families

Using the Fragrance Wheel

View the wheel as you’re smelling fragrances to build the associations and start identifying fragrance families. Let the wheel be your guide and pinpoint the prominent notes in a fragrance composition, tracing their placement on the wheel. By understanding the primary olfactive families and their subgroups, you can decipher the composition of a scent and appreciate its nuanced character.

In the end, it’s not just about smelling the fragrance; it’s about experiencing the emotions, memories, and dreams it evokes. Just as a symphony transcends the individual music notes on a page, a fragrance exceeds the mere combination of its notes.

The Hub signature scent helps reinforce the brand across its national locations while also providing a sense of arrival. This element is useful in building an engaging space where workers want to return to.

Air Aroma was delighted to take part in a tour and panel discussion at Melbourne Design Week last week at Morris Moor, highlighting the benefits of adaptive reuse, sustainability, architecture, and how scent can uplift interior spaces. The location, Morris Moor Building 4 in Moorabbin, is Air Aroma International’s new global headquarters. That’s right, we’re moving! Read more about the exciting space here.

Melbourne Design Week / Adaptive Reuse for Community Connection

Annalisa France from Air Aroma’s global sales team spoke alongside Morris Moor developer Marcus Jankie of Up Property, architect Gaston Nogues of ClarkeHopkinsClarke Architects, and Kapitol Project Manager Jamie Kerr. Attendees were able to see first-hand the transformation of the mid-century Phillip Morris factory site into a sustainable commercial development which saved 19 million kilos of embodied carbon during construction. As part of the demolition program, Kapitol Group achieved a 92 percent recycled rate of materials, undertaking hand demolition of the existing structure.

Panel Discussion at Morris Moor Air Aroma

“The goal was to reuse as much of the existing building as possible. This involved retaining the structure, finishes, flooring and glazing to not only capture the invaluable and non-replicable charter of the buildings but to harness the one-off opportunity of limited environmental impact through adaptive reuse over new construction,” said Marcus Jankie.

There is an abundance of natural light, lush native plants nourished by rainwater reuse, a 460-solar-panel system, and green pedestrian corridors that connect the bustling hospitality precinct with a dynamic mix of commercial, retail, and lifestyle amenities. These elements along with the community focus were important considerations for us when finding our new home. Along with tenants New Balance and Clik Collective, we’re joining a community of creative, forward-thinking businesses.

“We are thrilled to welcome the Air Aroma team to Morris Moor,” says Marcus Jankie, General Manager of Up Property, the owner of Morris Moor. “Air-Aroma’s values and aspirations perfectly align with the vibrant community we are building here. Air Aroma’s innovative approach and global reach exemplify the spirit of creativity and entrepreneurship that defines our precinct.”

Morris Moor Building 4

“Morris Moor represents an exciting new chapter for Air Aroma,” says Alan Van Roemburg, CEO of Air Aroma.  “As a global pioneer in scent marketing for luxury brands, we are eager to continue crafting unique olfactive logos amongst a thriving community. Our new headquarters at Morris Moor will not only serve as a strategic hub for our operations but also as a testament to our continued dedication to excellence.”

Morris Moor Scent

Our sense of smell is intricately linked to our emotions and memories, influencing 75% of our daily emotions. Through our collaboration with Morris Moor, we are excited to capture the essence of this dynamic precinct in a signature scent, which is diffused in the building, welcoming visitors while reflecting the contemporary style of the precinct.

With scent characteristics of green, woody, and inviting, the Morris Moor scent includes notes of saffron, cedarwood, blond driftwood, violet, tobacco, sandalwood, birch foliage, sage, coriander, and hibiscus seeds.

“We have already had fantastic feedback. No doubt this will add to the uniqueness of Morris Moor, and we truly value being able to have these experiences and connections with the tenants of Morris Moor”, says Marcus Jankie.

Stay tuned for more news about our new office location.

The Best Scents Proven to Enhance Focus

Diffusing scents can have many purposes: encouraging relaxation, boosting energy, and increasing productivity and concentration. Whether used for personal purposes at home, diffused in a retail environment, or utilized in a workplace, certain scents can influence a person’s mood and behaviour. Citrus & Peppermint

The most effective scents to increase productivity and concentration are peppermint and citrus scents. When inhaled, these fresh and bright scents can decrease fatigue and promote mental clarity and focus. Studies have shown that when lemon was introduced in the workplace, a significant increase in productivity was measured, reducing workplace errors, and also increasing speed in typing. Studies have also found peppermint to be an effective scent for alertness, aiding in concentration.

Why Use Scent in the Workplace?

Physical working environments have a significant impact on productivity. As many corporate workers have experienced with the global shift towards working from home during the pandemic, dealing with displacement from workplace can greatly alter one’s work. Now with the workforce facing another notable shift back into the office, employers are rethinking office amenities to aid in a smooth transition. Using scent in the workplace can have a positive impact on employees and create a comfortable, engaging and productive environment.

Make It Comfortable

Research has found that comfort perception and work performance are positively correlated. As workers are returning the office, companies must keep this in mind. From temperature regulation, limiting distracting noise pollution, and incorporating plants – there are countless ways to enhance employee comfort while in the office.

Enhancing Mood as an Amenity

Noted in Surface Mag; as employers make the move to entice workers back to the office, implementing scent is an amenity that an increasing number of companies are exploring in a bid to enhance workplace atmosphere and contentment. While there has been little research done on the direct effects of aromatization in the workplace, the use of scent in indoor environments has been found to both positively enhance mood as well as aid in comfort and relaxation levels of workers. This in turn can positively impact workplace performance.

Using Scent Diffuser for a better working environment

Incorporating Scent for a more Productive Workplace

Air Aroma provides optimal scenting solutions for companies and home-based workers alike, making it easier than ever to invest in making your workspace a more comfortable and productive environment.

The Importance of Sleep

In recent years, people are sleeping worse than ever before. Although sleep is one of the three pillars of health, along with nutrition and movement, many people are not getting enough for their wellbeing. With higher caffeine intake, increased screen time, and external stressors, it’s no surprise that adults are having a harder time sleeping in 2023. Today, people will do almost anything to get a good night sleep. From taking melatonin or CBD, installing blackout curtains, listening to ambient sounds, or even using sleep specific apps to aid in lulling themselves to bed. Intro: aromatherapy, a natural alternative consisting of inhaling essential oil scents, that has been used for sleep aid for thousands of years. Using scents for better sleep is a tried and true method to receive an array of benefits and sleep improvement.

Nearly one third of Australian adults do not regularly get the recommended amount of uninterrupted sleep they need, being the optimal seven to nine hours a night. In a study, 60 per cent said their sleep was constantly changing and irregular, while a quarter reported they regularly wake up feeling not well-rested, putting their physical and mental health at risk, according to new research. Overtime, this sleep disparity can lead to health risks as well as bleed into one’s work and personal life, potentially causing changes in productivity, mood, and memory.

Inhale Exhale: Aromatherapy for Sleep

Aromatherapy has been used for its healing properties since ancient times. Scents can be applied, inhaled, or diffused to aid with a variety of health benefits such as pain relief, stress and anxiety easement, and decreasing sleeplessness. Although not typically a sense associated with sleep, studies have shown that smell directly affects sleep. Distinct smells can promote better sleep quality, help people wake up in the morning, and even influence dreams and memory formation during rest.

People can utilize this knowledge and set themselves up for a successful night sleep by incorporating specific scents into their bedtime routine. Exposure to scents associated with calming, clarifying, or mood boosting properties can help one ease into a restful state and create a bedroom environment more conductive to falling, and staying, asleep.

Calm your Nerves: Lavender & Bergamot

The body responds in step with external pressures – when one experiences stress or strain in their life, their body reacts. For example, through increased heart rate, increased blood pressure, and increased cortisol production. These changes are the exact opposite of what the body should be experiencing when winding down for sleep and can majorly contribute to sleeping problems like insomnia.

Lavender, the most studied scent in relation to sleep studies, is a natural scent that contains chemical compounds that calm the nervous system, thus counteracting stress and anxiety. Studies have found that inhaling lavender essential oils can lower heart rate, body temperature, and blood pressure – all processes that increase with stress and decrease as the body naturally prepares itself for sleep. The citrus ingredient bergamot contains similar properties, helping to reduce blood pressure and heart rate when used for aromatherapy.

Lavender blooms scent detail as an aid for better sleep

Clear your Head: Peppermint & Eucalyptus

Also found to positively impact sleep are the scents of Peppermint and Eucalyptus. When inhaled, these bright, herbal scents can clear one’s head of racing thoughts after a long day, a common barricade to falling asleep, and leave you in a more relaxed state. Clearing the head in a more physical way, these scents can also help to clear out congestion, which in turn can help to relieve breathing and aid in dropping off to sleep.

Balance your Mood

After a day of heightened emotions, one can find themselves struggling to level out before bed. To counteract this sensation, try using aromatherapy with Sandalwood and Cedarwood oils. These scents are known for their mood-balancing properties, calming emotions so you can unwind before bed. Specifically, these oils contain a chemical compound, cedrol, that causes a sedative effect. Cedrol also activates the body’s parasympathetic nervous system, better known as your “rest and digest” system.

While less studied, findings point to vetiver scents positively impacting sleep. The deep, earthly smell works similarly to its woody counterparts, slowing the mind down to a more relaxed, grounded state.

Within the wide collection of fragrance notes, there are few scents as luscious and captivating as fig. Often associated with the dreamy elegance of the Mediterranean, fig fragrance offers a transformative experience to a romantic sun-drenched enclave, or a warm and sensual feeling. Present in Air Aroma’s Fig Essence fragrance, the scent note has a layered and juicy quality that works well amongst other woody, floral, and fruit notes. Read below for more insight into fig’s history and origins, and why it continues to be a favorite in the world of fragrance.

The Fig Tree

Scientifically identified as Ficus Carica, the fig tree is native to the Mediterranean region and has been cultivated for thousands of years. Yielding hundreds to thousands of fruits in a single growing season, its fruits are a delicious culinary delight that bear a distinctive fragrance which varies throughout the tree’s life cycle. Fig fragrance captures the essence of the entire fig tree, from its fresh, hardy green leaves to the ripe, sweet violet fruit and even the earthy, woody notes of the tree’s bark.

Fig Tree Fruit Scent

Fig History

Fig trees could have been the first domesticated plant of the Neolithic Revolution, which dates to almost 12,000 years ago. This is a time period in which humans began cultivating plants, breeding animals for food, and forming permanent settlements, which was an incredibly important period of change. So it can be said that figs were among the first fruits to be cultivated by humans!

Fig fragrance’s rich history includes ancient Greeks and Romans, who revered the fig tree both for its fruit and aromatic leaves. They used fig leaves to create wreaths and garlands, infusing their festivities with a natural green scent.

Referenced in religious texts like the book of Genesis, the Ficus Carica trees provided the fig leaves worn by Adam and Eve after eating forbidden fruit from the tree of knowledge in the Garden of Eden.

What Does Fig Smell Like?

Fig fragrance is incredibly versatile, exuding fresh and green qualities and warm and woody notes simultaneously. On top of that, it has a fruity note that’s juicy sweet while remaining lush and sophisticated. Because of this, it’s an accessible fragrance tailored to different preferences, with a natural, inviting quality. The milky sweet or lactonic characteristic is reminiscent of coconut or milky butter. The emotional resonance of fig conjures warm, powerful connections of vivid images like biting into a fresh fig or meandering through Mediterranean hills.

Fig Essence is a luxurious aroma oil that elevates hotels, offices, homes, and retail spaces.

Fig fragrance is a timeless and enchanting choice for those who appreciate the natural beauty and complexity of the historic fruit. Explore the beauty of Fig in Air Aroma’s fig essence fragrance, or design a custom signature scent inspired by the many facets of Fig.
